What is Gelcoat and How Can You Use It? - TRUE COMPOSITES

Have you ever heard of gelcoat? If not, then you’re certainly not alone. A lot of people don’t know what gelcoat is or how it can be used. Gelcoat is a type of resin—in fact, it's the most common type of resin—that has many practical applications, from boatbuilding to automotive repair. Let's take a closer look at exactly what gelcoat is and how it can be used.

What Is Gelcoat?
Gelcoat is a type of resin that consists of an epoxy-based polymer system combined with pigments and catalysts. It's applied as a liquid coating that hardens into a smooth, shiny surface when cured. The end result is a glossy finish that's highly resistant to UV radiation, chemicals, solvents, and impact damage. There are two main types of gelcoats: polyester-based and vinylester-based. Polyester-based gelcoats are cheaper but less durable than their vinylester counterparts; however, both types offer superior protection against the elements compared to other coatings such as paint or varnish.

Gelcoat has many practical uses in the world today. One of its most common applications is in boatbuilding; it's often used as the outermost layer on fiberglass boats in order to protect them from water damage and the sun's harmful UV rays. In addition to this, gelcoat can also be used for automotive repairs (such as fixing scratches or dents), furniture restoration, and even art projects!

Another great use for gelcoat is in home renovation projects; such as repair to a pool or bathtub. Plus, its high durability means that it won't easily chip or scratch like traditional paints do—it'll last you years!

In short, gelcoat offers many practical uses in today’s world ranging from boatbuilding to home renovation projects. Not only does it provide excellent protection against water damage and UV radiation but its high durability ensures that it will last far longer than traditional paints or varnishes would.
